Erich Maria Remarque (22 June 1898 – 25 September 1970) was a German novelist known for his works depicting the horrors and the futility of war. His real name was Erich Paul Remark, but he published his works under a pseudonym that mirrored a variant of his family's name.

Remarque was born in Osnabrück, Germany. His exposure to the devastation caused by World War I, in which he served from 1916 to 1918, deeply influenced his thoughts and later his writings.

His most renowned work, "All Quiet on the Western Front" ("Im Westen nichts Neues" in German), published in 1928, is a grim and profoundly moving account of a young soldier's experiences in World War I. The novel provides a stark portrayal of the physical and mental stress faced by soldiers, as well as the sense of detachment from civilian life felt by many upon returning home from the frontlines. It is renowned for its vivid and unflinching depiction of the war's brutality and its impact on the lives of the people who fought in it.

The international fame of "All Quiet on the Western Front" led to Remarque's persecution during the rise of the Nazi party, and his books were among those burnt publicly by the Nazis in 1933. He left Germany in 1932 and lived in Switzerland until 1939, when he immigrated to the United States. He became a U.S. citizen in 1947.

Other notable works by Remarque include "The Road Back" ("Der Weg zurück") and "Arch of Triumph" ("Arc de Triomphe"). Despite his diverse body of work, he is often identified as an anti-war author due to the powerful anti-war messages in many of his books.

Remarque continued writing until his death in 1970. His works continue to be read and studied for their profound exploration of the human condition during times of war.
