نجيب الحداد هو رائد من رواد النهضة الأدبية، وعلم بارز في تاريخ المسرح العربي، حيث برز في مجالات المقالة والحكمة والقصة. يُعزى إليه الفضل في دعم الأدب الناشئ من خلال إبداعاته، وهو رائد الأدب المسرحي تأليفًا وترجمة، ومؤسس للمدرسة الأدبية الحديثة التي اهتمت بالتعمق في الأدب الغربي وتجديد الصحافة والشعر والقصة والمسرحية. وُلد عام 1867م في بيروت لعائلة شعرية عريقة، حيث كان والده صاحب ديوان "قلادة العصر"، وجده لأمه ناصيف اليازجي، وقد تلقى تعليمه على يد خاليه. بدأ دراسته في مدرسة "الفرير" قبل أن ينتقل إلى المدرسة الأمريكية في الإسكندرية. بعد اندلاع الثورة العُرابية، عاد إلى بيروت واستأنف تعليمه في مدرسة الروم البطريركية الكاثوليكية. شغل عدة مناصب، حيث عمل أستاذًا للغتين العربية والفرنسية، ثم انتقل إلى جريدة الأهرام ككاتب ومحرر، أسس بعدها جريدة "لسان العرب" و"جريدة السلام". قدم العديد من المسرحيات، من أبرزها "الرجاء بعد اليأس" و"صلاح الدين الأيوبي"، وترك ديوان شعر بعنوان "تذكار الصبا". تُوفي عام 1899م بعد إصابته بداء الرئة.
